Microplastics & Hexane-Free Castor Oil: What Your Skin Really Absorbs

If you have watched The Plastic Detox on Netflix released March 2026 you already know microplastics are not a fringe concern. The documentary follows couples with unexplained infertility as they strip plastics from their homes, and the results are hard to ignore. What it does not cover in depth is one of the most overlooked sources of daily plastic exposure: your skincare. The products you apply every morning and night are a repeated input, and over time, what your skin absorbs shapes its resilience, its balance, and its appearance. Two of the most common sources of unwanted accumulation are microplastics and solvent residues. The first source: microplastics

So hexane-extracted castor oil carries something it should not, and delivers less of what it should. Both at once.

What hexane-free, cold-pressed actually means

Cold pressing uses mechanical pressure only, no heat, no solvents. The oil retains its full fatty acid profile, its natural antioxidants, and its structural integrity. Nothing is introduced that does not belong there. Nothing is degraded in the process of getting it out.

Hexane-free is not a label upgrade. It means the accumulation problem stops here at the ingredient, before it reaches your skin.

Why organic sourcing closes the loop

Even cold-pressed oil is only as clean as what it came from. Conventionally farmed castor plants are grown with synthetic herbicides, pesticides, and fertilizers  and traces of those inputs carry through into the extracted oil regardless of how carefully it is pressed. Organic cultivation eliminates that layer at the source.

In a short-ingredient product, there is nowhere for compromised sourcing to hide. The quality of the raw material is the quality of what reaches your skin.
